Have you worked at my venue?

That’s a very fair question. Having prior experience at a venue is helpful for a photographer in that they don’t need to arrive early to scout the venue out the day of. While I have personally worked at dozens of venues all over the country, I don’t rely on prior venue experience at all to dictate the photos I take. Weather and lighting plays a huge role. The first day I’ve photographed a wedding could have been a bright summer day, whereas the next time could be a snowy winter day. The sun sets at a different time, weather might push us to do more portraits inside rather than outside, and accessibility looks different. Prior venue experience doesn’t apply in most situations if I am being honest. An experienced photographer who knows how to handle any scenario is far more important.

Having a photographer scout a venue out before they start wedding day is important. I always arrive at least one hour prior to the start of my shooting time if a venue is brand new to me so I can explore every corner of it before we start your day.
